NIOSH Publishes 2014 Hazardous Drug List
(Germantown, WI - September 5th, 2014) PharmEcology Services, WM Healthcare Solutions, Inc.
On September 5th, 2014, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), published the 2014 NIOSH List of Antineoplastic and Other Hazardous Drugs in Healthcare Settings, commonly referred to as the NIOSH Hazardous Drug Alert. The current update adds 27 drugs and includes a review of the 2004 and 2012 lists, resulting in the removal of 12 drugs that did not meet the NIOSH criteria for hazardous drugs. A new format was introduced which divides drugs into three groups: Group 1: Antineoplastic drugs; Group 2: Non-antineoplastic drugs that meet one or more of the NIOSH criteria for a hazardous drug; Group 3: Drugs that primarily pose a reproductive risk to men and women who are actively trying to conceive and women who are pregnant or breast feeding, because some of these drugs may be present in breast milk. The 2014 NIOSH List of Antineoplastic and Other Hazardous Drugs may be accessed at http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/docs/2014-138/pdfs/2014-138.pdf. The PharmE Waste Wizard® reflects the changes to the 2014 list.
