PharmEcology Services, WM Healthcare Solutions, Inc is pleased to announce that our PharmE^® Waste Wizard and our PharmE^® Inventory Analysis now present consolidated DOT shipping descriptions to make it simpler for our customers to manage their pharmaceutical waste.

In contrast to the traditional approach of identifying each item’s shipping description and then using those detail descriptions to determine the appropriate description for an entire container, PharmEcology has determined the appropriate DOT shipping description for each of the containers we recommend as part of our pharmaceutical waste categorization. This dramatically simplifies the process and, as a result, we estimate that DOT’s broad shipping description for Waste Medicine will apply to 97% of a hospital’s hazardous pharmaceutical waste.

DOT’s requirements for shipping descriptions are quite extensive and this enhancement also addresses the remaining 3% of pharmaceutical waste items, taking into account requirements for corrosives, oxidizers, aerosols, biohazardous items, dual waste items, controlled substances, bulk chemicals, and other considerations.

This enhancement continues PharmEcology’s efforts to make it easier for organizations to properly segregate, manage, and ship their pharmaceutical waste. Having recommendations for specific DOT shipping descriptions will help these organizations work with their vendors to reduce the need for in-house or outside DOT expertise and to increase compliance with DOT’s requirements for properly packaging, labeling, and shipping hazardous pharmaceutical waste.
