PharmEcology® Associates, LLC was honored to receive a 2004 Champion for Change
Award from Hospitals for a Healthy Environment (H2E) at the April 13th CleanMed Conference. Thirteen Champion for Change
awards were presented to H2E Champions which demonstrated environmental leadership during 2003. In addition to PharmEcology®,
this year's recipients included the Catholic Health Association, Catholic Healthcare West, Consorta, Novation, Premier, and the
Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources.
PharmEcology’s award was based on tools we designed to assist hospitals to identify
and manage hazardous pharmaceutical waste. The PharmEcology Wizard, a web-based search engine featuring virtually every drug
product in the marketplace, identifies which drugs are hazardous chemical waste based on the EPA’s Resource Conservation and Recovery
Act (RCRA). A number of common drugs, such as epinephrine and warfarin, are hazardous chemical waste and must be identified,
segregated, and managed differently from other waste pharmaceuticals. The PharmEcology Wizard also identifies a “risk management”
category for pharmaceuticals, such as many chemotherapy drugs, which are not listed in the RCRA regulations, which have not kept
up with drug development. PharmEcology also offers Formulary Reviews to jump-start the hospital’s efforts and on-site Pharmaceutical
Waste Management Reviews to evaluate current procedures and provide an action plan for compliance.
